Drop is what the Dutch call liquorice. The Netherlands is truely a land of drop. An amazing 32,000,000 kilos of liquorice is sold annually in the Netherlands. That amounts to around 2 kilos per person per year! Sampling Dutch liquorice should be high on any tourist's list of things to do when visiting the Netherlands.
The Dutch have their own peculiar type of liquorice that they like to indulge in. Unlike many other countries where sweet liquorice reigns supreme and is the most consumed, in the Netherlands salty liquorice is the standard. For many expecting to bite in to something sweet, this can come as somewhat of a surprise.
Those tourists visiting the Netherlands that are looking to pick up a packet of drop to take back home should be able to find a wide assortment in almost all Dutch supermarkets. Another option is to visit one of the many city markets, that usual take place in the inner city centres on Saturdays, to buy it straight from a street vendor. The advantage of going to a market is you'll be able to try a few different types before you buy.
