The Golden Arm is the place for those looking for a gay club. Spread over 4 floors, the music isn’t always the best, but it is the only serious game in town when it comes to gay clubs. Like most clubs in the Netherlands, the action doesn’t really start until midnight. Expect to dance until dawn.
Any large musical acts coming to Groningen invariably play at De Oosterpoort. There is a large variety of acts passing through and there is no recurring performance that is a must to catch. Depending on your musical tastes and what is on offer in any particular week, De Oosterpoort will be of a varying level of interest to you. If you are lucky you might get to catch one of the more well known acts that have passed through such as McFly.
Every jazz enthusiast has to visit this bar. It is extremely popular amongst the jazz loving denizens of Groningen and offers a great chance to mix with the locals. The music is great and it has one of the best jazz atmospheres going around.
The Grand Theatre is very much the flag ship of theatre in Groningen. A respectable variety of musical and theatrical performances come on offer. A visit to the Grand Theatre is very much dependant on what you are interested in and what is on offer at any specific time.
Images is a wonderful film theater in Groningen. It only screens films of an artistic nature such as those you’d encounter at film festivals, as well as the occasional classic. If you are after a block buster film, then this isn’t the place for you.
The Palace is your typical Dutch nightclub aimed at the youth market. The dance floor is massive and the music is nothing special, but it is what you would expect to hear. A nice night out for the young tourist that likes nightclubs, but beyond that it is one for the average tourist to miss.
Anyone that has an interest in rock music that hasn’t yet broken on to the international scene should head here. Vera is famous for the high quality acts that are big names on the underground international music circuit. Many past acts have gone on to break through and become massive successes such as Joy Division, U2, The White Stripes, Sonic Youth and Nirvana.
