The Goudkantoor, or the Gold Office, occupies a building dating from 1635. The name dates from 1814 when a gold and silver guarantor agency occupied the building. The style of architecture is Dutch Renaissance and it was built by the council as a testament to Groningen superiority over other towns in the region. The outside is matched by the beauty of the inside. A visit to the Goudkantoor is as much a trip to a restaurant as it is a cultural and historical experience. The food is great too. If you’d like to visit but are concerned about spending too much, drop in for either a morning coffee or a lunchtime soup.
