Northern Maritime Museum 2 Tulip Rating

The museum is dedicated to the history of shipbuilding and shipping in the North of the Netherlands, covering a time span of the Middle Ages to present day. The museum is housed in two medieval buildings dating from the fifteenth century. As expected, most of the exhibits are maritime in nature including whaling, ship engines, fisheries and the life of a sailor on board a ship.

In the same complex of buildings you can also visit the Niemeyer Tobacco Museum (Niemeyer Tabaksmuseum). This museum shows the history of the use of tobacco throughout the ages in the Netherlands. This museum has one of the world’s largest collections of objects related to the history and use of tobacco.

The museum is well funded and very well organized. However, to get the most enjoyment out of it you really need to be at least slightly interested in either maritime activities or tobacco paraphernalia.
