On the Western side of the Grote Markt (Great Market), is the neo-classical Stadhuis (Town Hall) dating from 1777-1810.
An open competition was held to find a design for the Town Hall. This was the first time that such a competition was held in the Netherlands. It was won by the architect Jacob Otten Husly. Unfortunately due to financial restraints on the city, Husly’s original winning design was not able to be built. Husly however submitted a more sober version of his design to the city which was built in two phases in the years 1793-1795 and 1802-1810.
Being centrally located it takes very little effort to take at least a few moments to visit the Stadhuis and is well worth the time.
