The landscape of Schiermonnikoog is crowned with two very prominent towers. Both towers were constructed in 1854 to serve as lighthouses to guide shipping in the area. In 1910 the southern tower was retired from service as a lighthouse. Advances in shipping and lighthouse technologies meant only one operating lighthouse was necessary. In 1950 the southern tower received a new lease on life as a water tower, but more recently serves solely as an antenna tower.

The northern tower, the functioning light house, is painted in a dominating red, while the southern tower remains a more traditional white.
