Although Schiermonnikoog is relatively remote, it is still easily accessible due to the short travelling distances involved in reaching any part of the Netherlands.

The only way to get on to the island is via the public ferry. The ferry leaves the mainland from Lauwersoog. This is as far as you will be able to go with your own vehicle. Tourists are prohibited from taking their vehicles on to the island. There is a garage complex to keep your car safe, but it is relatively expensive. As with most car garages, you'll pay when you come back from the island and collect your car. Tickets for the ferry are purchased at the fery ticket office, rather than on the ferry itself. All tickets are return tickets; tickets cannot be bought on the other end of the journey (there is no ticket office on the island).

Once on the island there will be be a number of buses awaiting to take visitors from where the ferry docks to the town. All buses head to the town, though they stop in different parts of the town. Any bus should be fine as the town is so small, everything is easily within walking distance. Tickets can be purchased on the bus for 2.50 return, which works out cheaper than any other prepurchased public transport ticket.
