Particpation in sport in the Netherlands runs deep in the national culture. Over 4.5 million Dutch are registered with one of the more than 35,000 sports clubs that dot the country. Above this, two thirds of the population partake in sporting activies weekly.
Football (soccer) has the largest following of all sports, followed by field hocky and volleyball in second and third places. Aside from the team sports, individual sports are widely played, dominated mostly by tennis, gymnastics and golf. There are a number of sports native to the Dutch that are still practiced, though no where near as widely as the sports already mentioned. These include fierljeppen, kolven, klootschieten, kaatsen, beugelen and korfball.
